I had the opportunity to photograph a baccalaureate at the Air Force Academy for a news outlet.  I love the architecture of the academy chapel and it is always a great experience to be able to rub shoulders with cadets there.  It was a great experience and I wish all the best to the cadets of class 2017!

Fan X 2017

I always love coming back to FanX and SLCC to be on the media team.  There is so much amazing cosplay and the celebrity guests never disapoint.  One of the highlights for me this year was meeting Weird Al. I've always been a huge fan of his music and UHF is still one of my favorite movies.  On top of that, one of my favorite cosplayers (Captian K) was dressed as Weird Al and I was able to snap a pic of the two of them together.  Outstanding. Can't wait to go back in September.

Broncos Victory Parade

The Denver Broncos are the champions of Super Bowl 50!  They brought the Lombardi trophy back to Denver and had a parade and rally to celebrate.  Over a million fans were in attendance.  It took a lot of effort to get into the city, but I was lucky enough to join in the celebrations and take some photos.  This was probably Peyton Manning's "last rodeo" and it was great to see him win another Super Bowl.  Von Miller was the game MVP and led the defense to a record setting season.

Labor Day Lift Off

The hot air balloon festival of Colorado Springs is back.  Under new management and with a new name, the Labor Day Lift Off is still scheduled around the Labor Day holiday.  Plenty of balloons, festivities, and fun to be had at the annual event.

Here are some pictures from this year's event:

Ben Carson for President

Ben Carson, presidential candidate, made a stop in Colorado Springs on August 27, 2015.  I was able to be at the event and take some photos.  It was exciting to see a candidate up close.  He had a lot of great things to say and there was a lot of energy at the rally.  It was a great opportunity to witness part of the political process here in Colorado.

Boston Marathon 2015

I happened to be in Boston this year during the time that the marathon was happening. It was an incredible event to behold. I stood outside in the bitter cold and rain for four hours doing my best to protect my equipment from the weather...and loved every minute of it. I was just a block or two from the finish line and got to witness athletes at the point where they were the most drained (physically, mentally, and emotionally), yet at the point where they also had the most hope because the end was finally in sight. I saw top athletes from around the globe come striding in at a blistering pace. I also saw disabled folks cross the finish line claiming their own personal victories. I saw military veterans running in their boots and uniforms. In the background were armies of volunteers helping make the event possible as well as law enforcement protecting runners and spectators. Check out all of my Boston Marathon photos here because the photos say a lot more than my words ever could:

StarFest 2015

My second year of being on the photography staff for StarFest. Three years ago it was this convention that got me hooked on photographing conventions and cosplay. In addition to be a great convention all around, StarFest sticks out to me as having an amazing costume contest and dance (Federation Ball). While the main focus of the convention is probably Star Wars and Star Trek, there are different "fests" within the convention devoted to Dr. Who, Horror, model builing, and gaming. Here is my photo gallery from StarFest 2015:

Galaxy Fest - Fashion Show

Galaxy Fest is a sci-fi convention right here in the good old 719 (Colorado Springs). It's full of zombies, steam punk, comics, and all things geek. Galaxy Fest also has a fashion show that highlights local designers and talent. It is a very worth-while convention to attend.  It says a lot that this convention was held at the same time as Animeland Wasabi up in Denver and I chose to attend Galaxy Fest. Here is a link to my shots of the fashion show part of the convention:

Celebrities of FanX 15

I am a huge Dr. Who geek.  I was beyond excited to take pictures of Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Billie Piper at FanX 15. Other very cool celebrities that I got to photograph were Mark Pelligrino (Supernatural, Lost), Anthony Michael Hall (Breakfast Club), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future), Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek), and Tom Felton (Harry Potter). My celebrity photo album from FanX 15 can be viewed here:

Fan X 15 - SLC

From the creators of Salt Lake Comic Con comes FanX, which is a slightly smaller event in the Winter/Spring. Just as much fun as SLCC, the Salt Lake events are my favorite cons to take photos for. The celebrity lineup was amazing and I really enjoyed being on the media staff and taking group cosplay photos at this event. I look forward to hopefully returning to this even for years to come.  See all of my FanX 15 photos on Facebook here:

NDK 2014

Nan Desu Kan (NDK for short) is a Japanese pun translating loosely to "what is it?".  NDK is in the family of comic cons, but focuses mainly on Japanese art, animation, and culture.  Held each year in Denver in September, NDK is one of the premier anime conventions around and provides a wide range of cultural panels, musical guests, games, dances, workshops, etc.  Guest speakers are drawn from all over the USA and Japan and include directors, voice actors, and artists.

More of my photos from NDK 2014 can be seen here:

As one of the official photographers at Salt Lake Comic Con 2014 I was able to get up close and personal while photographing many of the celebrities. There was a record-breaking crowd of over 120,000 in attendance over the weekend, making Salt Lake Comic Con the largest convention in Utah and the third largest Comic Convention in the United States.  With so many panels and celebrities in attendance, the chore was figuring out how to see everything on my list. One of the highlights for me was when I attended Lou Ferrigno's presentation. At the end, the moderator asked me to come on stage and take a photo of Lou and the crowd (seen above).

Last Year for the Colorado Balloon Classic?

It appears that 2014 is likely the last year that the Colorado Balloon Classic will be held in Colorado Springs.  After nearly 40 years of holding the event in the Springs and becoming Colorado's largest air show, the organizers point to difficulties with city politics and procedures as well as sponsorship challenges.  The Balloon Classic has been one of the city's longest traditions and has consistently drawn huge crowds over Labor Day weekend.  People came from all over the region over the past three days to watch scores of balloons take off over Prospect Lake in the mornings and to watch the "Balloon Glo" event in the evenings.  It will truly be sad if the tradition comes to an end.

Big Announcement! I just found out that I was selected to be part of the media team as a photographer for Salt Lake Comic Con in September!  I can't be more excited.  They anticipate about 120,000 attendees.  Salt Lake Comic Con is the third largest Comic Con in the United States.  There will be a ton of cool celebrities including Stan Lee!  Stay tuned for a ton of geeky photos in early September.

As I don't have a specific photo or album to share yet, please enjoy a compilation of Doctor Who cosplay photos that I have taken over several previous conventions.  (Season 8 of Doctor Who is upon us!)

StarFest 2014

May the 4th be with you!  StarFest 2014 was held in Denver, CO May 2-4.  I was happy to be on the official photgraphy staff for the convention.  While the StarFest caters to Star Wars geeks everywhere, there are additional "fests" that take place all within this single event.  The most notable of these are HorrorFest, ComicFest, and GameFest.  Your ticket gets you in to see and participate in all of these different areas of StarFest so there is sure to be something to please everyone. Starfest always attracts some big name guests.  While there are too many to name here, the most notable guests this year were:

Amanda Tapping

Giancarlo Esposito

Nichelle Nichols

Tim Russ

Billy Dee Williams

Sam Witwer

Suzie Plakson

A couple of highlights that stood out to me were Suzie Plakson's presentation and the singer/performer group Not Literally.  Suzie Plakson is best know for playing K'Ehler, the Klingon Wife of Worf on Star Trek The Next Generation.  During her presentation she spoke about what it was like working on the set and gave background details about her character.  All this while Kevin Atkins applied makeup transforming her into K'Ehleyr.  It was pretty fascinating.  The group Not Literally was hilarious.  They specialize in producing parody music videos that make fun of geeky movies and TV shows like Harry Potter, Doctor Who, and Game of Thrones, etc.  On stage they sang the songs live while their videos played on huge screens.  Very funny.

If you are into comic conventions, StarFest is definitely one of the best.  The link below provides photos taken during StarFest 2014, including general cosplay photos, celebrities, the costume contest, and more.

Denver Fashion Weekend - Night 2

Night 2 of DFW was all about local Colorado fashion designers and boutiques.  The pre-show party was DJ'd by the very cool J'adore.  The lineups included presentations by Oscar Utierre, Steadbrook, Crystal Lee, Yotomi Yoshida, Jiberish, Tikwid, and Mondo.  Mondo was certainly the most anticipated lineup of the night, and the most popular (he was the runner up finalist on Season 8 of Project Runway and later won the series' first All-Stars season).  However, I was completely fascinated by Tikwid's style and use of animal carcasses in its lineup.  It was a great show and very interesting.  I hope to go back next time because unfortunately I had to miss night three, which was the highly anticipated hair styling competition.

Denver Fashion Weekend - Night 1

So Denver has a pretty cool fashion scene.  Really, I heard about Denver Fashion Weekend through Schomp MINI's advertisements on Facebook.  I'm a fanatical MINI owner.  When I heard that MINI was a sponsor and would be showing their clothing line, I was hooked.  I obtained a media pass and drove up to check it out.  Night 1 kicked off with three national brands: MINI, Ducati, and Burton.  Prior to the show, there was a cool cocktail party, music, and vendors giving away free stuff.  Very fun atmosphere.  And then the show started.  Although I am partial to MINI, I have to say that Ducati and Burton have some fabulous clothing lines as well.

I think the photos do a better job than I can at describing the show:

St. Patty's Day 2014

Colorado Springs always has fun St. Patrick's Day festivities.  I've covered this for the past two years for the Gazette.  The morning starts off with a 50K bike ride and includes some pretty hilly sections.  I like to get some photos of the start of the race and then I zip over to Garden of the Gods to get some scenic individual shots of folks cruising through the park.  As you'll see from the photos, most of the bikers like to dress up. The same goes for the runners who participate in the 5K run.  I've shot photos of a lot of runs, but the 5K racers on St. Patty's Day are the craziest by far.  It's always fun to see a huge field of green swarming at me as everyone takes off from the starting line.  The race happens downtown and huge sections of the city are blocked off to traffic for the race and the parade that follows.  The festivities come to a close with the parade.  Over 100 entries stroll down the route including bands, floats, flags, leprechauns, firetrucks, and more.  Oh, and obviously there are swarms of bagpipes filling the air.  It is a great tradition and a lot of fun.  It would probably be an even bigger event with even bigger crowds if it weren't for the fact that our cold Colorado winds seem to always come out in full force around mid-March.

Animeland Wasabi 2014

Animeland Wasabi is an anime themed convention and I had a great time as one of the official photographers for the event.  What is anime?  While most think of it as Japanese animation, it really is an art form using a style of hand-drawn or computer animation that can be found anywhere in the world.  While Wasabi attracts a whole lot of anime-related characters, it caters to all kinds of animation from everywhere.  This is a great place to see people dressed up as all kinds of cartoon characters and video game characters of all types. Wasabi really tried to step it up this year with a formal dance, a rave, a huge video game room, rock bands, bouncy castles, and an extensive vendor showroom.  There is something here for everyone and the whole weekend seemed like one big party.

GalaxyFest Fashion Show

A unique feature about GalaxyFest in Colorado Springs each year is the fashion show that they put on.  There were SteamPunk and SciFi related themes, but there were also just regular fashion lines as well.  It was nice to see local artists and designers being promoted.

GalaxyFest 2014

GalaxyFest is a multi-genre pop culture convention in Colorado Springs, CO.  It is held each year around the February time frame.  The convention has a little bit of everything: SciFi, Fantasy, Anime, SteamPunk, Horror, and more.  Being that it is held in Colorado Springs, it might not be as large as some of the conventions in Denver, but GalaxyFest definitely holds its own.  It attracts great guests, hosts numerous panels, and has a huge vendor area.  This year I enjoyed most hearing from Joyce DeWitt, who played Jan on "Three's Company".  Oh, and the zombie crawl on the first day was also memorable.  There were zombies throughout the rest of the con.  I kept my distance from the creepy clown that kept popping up when I least expected.

Head over to my Facebook page to see more photos from GalaxyFest:

One Nation Walking Together

One Nation Walking Together is a non-profit organization in Colorado Springs that helps Native American tribes around the region by collecting and distributing donations.  I work with One Nation periodically to cover different events that bring publicity to their cause such as Pow Wows, and Cultural/Educational events.

Here are a few photos that I have taken at some of these events:
